Rising Damp Remediation in a Bristol Victorian Terrace
A Victorian terrace with recurring rising damp along the ground-floor walls, resolved with a full survey, damp-proof course renewal and long-term monitoring.
This Victorian terrace had recurring damp patches along the base of the hallway and living room walls, with paint bubbling and a persistent musty smell despite the tenant redecorating twice.
What we found
A full survey with moisture readings and thermal imaging confirmed rising damp: the original damp-proof course had failed in several sections, letting groundwater move up through the solid brick walls.
- Moisture readings consistently high up to roughly one metre from the floor
- Visible tide-marking and salt staining behind the old paintwork
- No evidence of penetrating damp or condensation contributing to the pattern
The remediation
We installed a new chemical damp-proof course across the affected walls, replaced the damaged plaster with a breathable re-plastering system, and left the walls to dry fully before decoration.
A year on, moisture readings in the treated walls remain normal and there's been no sign of the staining returning.
